Image of the Week: High-res HAWK Site

HAWK SAM SITEThe above image depicts part of a HAWK SAM site located near Chiba, Japan. This site is particularly interesting due to the extremely high resolution of the imagery provided. Individual missiles and other system components can be clearly identified, allowing an analyst to make a close examination of the operational status of the site. High resolution imagery such as this is gathered by aircraft using various different types of optical collection systems. Aircraft operating much closer to the target area than imaging satellites can provide extremely high resolution imagery and are not currently governed by the legal restrictions which limit publicly available satellite imagery to a maximum resolution of 0.5 meter.
