TRINITY TEST SITE
This week's Image of the Week, seen above, depicts the Trinity test site in New Mexico. On July 16th, 1945, the first full-scale nuclear weapons test was conducted in the United States. Following the 100-ton test detonation used for calibrating monitoring equipment on 7 May, the Trinity detonation measured between 19 and 21 kilotons. Thus began the nuclear age. The device, referred to as the "gadget", was an implosion-type fission bomb. The Fat Man bomb dropped on Nagasaki was a modification of this design.
