SIPRI is most probably wrong when calling the Libyan SA-5's Angara since this early version never was exported.
There are four main variants of S-200. The first is S-200 Angara, initially referred to as S-200A but the "A" was dropped and is rarely seen. This system entered service in 1967 and had a maximum range of 160 km, later increased to 180 km.
S-200V Vega entered service in 1969 with the new 5V21V missile with improved ECCM and other improvements but range still 180 km.
The next version was the S-200M Vega-M with the new 5V28 missile. This version had an initial range of 240 km, later changed to 255 km.
S-200M served as the basis for the S-200VE Vega-E export version. The designation leads one to believe that S-200VE is an export version of the less advanced S-200V, which is probably just the purpose of the devious naming scheme.
The last variant is the S-200D Dubna with the 5V28M missile and 300 km max intercept range. Testing of S-200D finished in 1987 and "small numbers" where deployed in the late 80's.
An export version, S-200DE, was marketed during the 90's.
To conclude, after this S-200 history ranting, I am pretty convinced that what Libya received was S-200VE Vega-E. It is possible that upgrades performed during the 90's may have brought the systems up to S-200DE standard. To confirm this by IMINT you probably need resolution good enough to read the stenciling on the missiles. Using 300 km range rings is prudent to show worst case coverage. The problem is that...That's entirely possible. The problem is that I can't conclusively prove it one way or the other, so I went with the longer-range variant to show the maximum theoretical capability. SIPRI calls it the SA-5C and Angara, implying the S-200DE. One Russian source calls it the S-200VE, but doesn't give the nickname.Sean O'Connorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12262754627111404755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-165290376032593437.post-35723241531508338872010-05-12T19:43:11.612-04:002010-05-12T19:43:11.612-04:00Hallo

Because they received them in '80 and at that time WarPac states received just Vega's. And I doubt that Angara was exported in '80 at all.
RegardsPavel Novaknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-165290376032593437.post-42730779812435232752010-05-12T08:59:07.767-04:002010-05-12T08:59:07.767-04:00Libya, still building targets.
